 Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center

Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center is seeking dedicated individuals for the formation of a new volunteer group, the Friends of Arlington Echo. This exciting new organization will train and coordinate volunteers to assist Arlington Echo staff in a variety of outdoor education experiences. Duties may include working with display aquariums and animal collections, maintaining and establishing native plant gardens, assisting with restoration projects and teaching students about our local environment and the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Volunteers may be asked to work at either Arlington Echo or one of its outdoor education program sites, and assist with special events. Howard County Conservancy

Property Manager Job Description  [2.27.08]

Approximately 30 hours/week

This position manages the three-acre John L. Clark Honors Garden, the grounds of the Conservancy’s 232-acre farm and the historic farmhouse and outbuildings.  The Arboretum Manager oversees the groundskeeper, gardener and the outsourced services such as mowing.  This position also works with the Master Plan Committee to develop long-term plans for property use.  Occasional Saturdays and evenings required.

Responsibilities include:

·        Staff representative to the Arboretum Committee.

·        Oversees maintenance of the Honors Garden including donor outreach, working with designers and installation of plants.

·        Serves as staff representative to the Master Plan Committee.

·        Oversees leases and environmental/agricultural agreements on 232-acre farm.

·        Oversees maintenance of historic farm house and outbuildings.

·        Works with volunteers and master gardeners on a variety of gardening and maintenance projects.

Outdoor Education Intern [2.5.08]
Serve as a paid intern by assisting the instructional staff at Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center in Millersville, MD.  Work involves maintaining the aquaculture lab (including eels, yellow perch, diamondback terrapins, horseshoe crabs), propagating native plants, facilitating low ropes course, instructing parent volunteers on outdoor education lessons and maintaining materials of instruction.  All interns assist with relevant environmental action including storm infiltration projects.  Interns assist teachers in planning, implementing and evaluating instructional lessons and programs; participate in staff development activities and in the preparation of instructional materials. Ecology Director [1/08/08]

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation seeks two seasonal field educators for the spring 2008 field season.  This position will begin in March and end in August (dates are somewhat flexible). This position often leads to a fulltime educator position.  The field educator will live and teach at one of our four island centers.  The position includes room and board and $1000/month.

Ecology Camp Internship -- Pickering Creek Audubon Center [2.11.08]

The Living Classrooms Foundation is a non-profit educational organization in Baltimore, MD that provides hands-on, interdisciplinary learning programs in challenging environments for students of all ages and backgrounds.

We are currently seeking enthusiastic individuals for the positions of: MATES, ON-BOARD EDUCATIONAL COORDINATOR, SCIENCE EDUCATORS & COOK. These individuals must be interested in joining a team of dedicated professionals to work with young people aboard one of our three historic Chesapeake Bay workboats – the pungy schooner LADY MARYLAND, buyboat MILDRED BELLE, and skipjack SIGSBEE.  Programs range in length from one-day trips to ten-day extended land/sea expeditions in the waters of Baltimore, the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries as well as off the New England coast.  Qualified applicants must possess a strong commitment to the education of all students, be motivated self-starters, function successfully as part of a team, and maintain a desire to work outdoors in a challenging but fun environment.  Education/biology background is preferred, but we will train the right people.

Summer Program Counselor:

Responsibilities: Mature, caring, responsible person needed to work with up to 15 summer program participants.  Staff to participant ratio is 1 to 5.  Work with Summer Program Director to develop and lead program activities, adventure/outing activities, youth development and environmental education programs.  Serve as a mentor for Counselor’s in Training (CIT’s), participants and other program staff.  Participate in staff training.

Qualifications:  At least 18 years old. Certified in First Aid and CPR preferred, good driving record, 2 years experience in residential programs or outdoor education setting preferred. Adequate technical skills in the following: leading high & low ropes initiatives, canoeing, environmental education, and facilitation is helpful.  Ability to share responsibilities.  Desire to increase skills and have a genuine enthusiasm for camp life.
