Success in a Tough Environment:
MAEOE Maryland Green Schools in Underrepresented Areas

In August and September of 2011, Maurie Kathan, Maryland Green School Organizer and Chesapeake Conservation Corps volunteer, conducted interviews with certified Maryland Green Schools. The interviews were focused on schools that successfully certified where the Maryland Green School Program is underrepresented, to determine how challenges were overcome. These areas are Title 1 schools, Urban Areas, the Eastern Shore and Western Maryland. In some of these areas, less than five percent of schools are certified as Maryland Green Schools. We asked the schools a series of questions about the green school certification process and how their school has changed since they became a green school. Using the information gathered from the interviews, MAEOE created two case studies and compiled advice for other schools. Maurie presented the results of the study at the 2011 Chesapeake Watershed Forum.
