Providing Nesting Sites for Birds
Nothing enhances a nature walk quite like discovering a nest of tiny chirping baby birds. There are many ways to make your yard, neighborhood or schoolyard more inviting to our feathered friends and their families. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources Wild Acres Program has developed a web site called Tips for Creating a Wild Backyard, a very comprehensive and easy to use web site providing information on nesting boxes for several varieties of birds. Another resource, the book Homes for Wildlife: A Planning Guide for Habitat Enhancement on School Grounds by Marilyn Wyzga, features detailed information and plans for building nesting boxes and other homes for wildlife. The below sites will provide you with additional information on creating nesting sites for a variety of bird species.
