to support Objective 3.1.1: School Active in Community
The purpose of Objective 3.1.1 is to demonstrate that your school participates in environmental service projects and shares your green culture with your larger community. Here are simple examples of spring activities that can meet this objective in conjunction with students action projects and Earth Month celebrations that you may already be doing for other areas of your application.
Planning to do a litter removal?
Partner with a local park so that it becomes a community service project that goes beyond your schoolyard. Or find your nearest watershed “friends” group and see if they are running spring litter cleanups that you can encourage students and families to attend.
Have a school garden?
Donate some of your harvest to a local food bank.
Running a Science Night or STEAM Fair that is open to
parents and guardians or the broader community?
Include an environmental focus such as an energy station where adults can learn about ways to save energy at home.
Planning a used clothing drive or book swap?
Emphasize and advertise it as a green school service project to educate others about the environmental benefits of reusing these items.
Remember to document these practices by saving photos of students participating in activities, newsletters or social media highlighting the events, or detailed event agendas with dates and clear explanations of activities.
