Green Schools Act of 2019, Evaluations, and Metrics

The Maryland Green Schools Program is evaluated annually by Human Nature Group, an outside evaluator. These evaluations help MAEOE shape the Application Process, Teacher Supports, and Grant Outreach to maximize efficiency and number of Green Schools applying for certification and grant awards. Being responsive to an ever-changing school system is essential for tailoring the Green School Program to best serve our MD Schools.

This will help us develop long-term goals that ensure MAEOE continues to be an inclusive space for all Marylanders.

Preamble Notes:

WHEREAS, The Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) encourages, engages and empowers our community to understand, responsibly use and promote the natural world.

WHEREAS, MAEOE has been and will continue to be committed to the intentional integration of principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and justice in our work.
WHEREAS, MAEOE recognizes that everyone is unique, and that our individual differences, including the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation,

socio-economic status, age, cognitive and physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies makes us a very diverse community. WHEREAS, Systemic racism and other inequities (class, gender, ability) in society have resulted in social, economic and environmental injustices, and over the years, these inequities have continued to manifest themselves in many of our various systems and sectors, including environmental education. MAEOE acknowledges the importance of dismantling systems of oppression and injustice that prevent equitable access to nature.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the MAEOE staff, Board of Directors, Advisory Council and members (current and potential) will champion and prioritize diversity, equity, inclusion and justice in all aspects of who we are, what we do and how we do it, and commit to dismantling systems of oppression and injustice by (i) intentionally prioritizing opportunities to listening to and learning from diverse members, partners and organizations to improve access to nature; (ii) developing, maintaining and evaluating Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely (SMART) goals to be integrated into the strategic plan of the organization, (iii) developing and implementing Board, Advisory Council and General Member recruitment strategies for diversifying their memberships, and

THEREFORE, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that MAEOE will continue to expand the Maryland Green Schools program, directing and supporting Green Schools and our partners to (i) develop and deliver programming using culturally relevant environmental examples and references that address diversity, equity, inclusion and justice through youth voices and student actions, ii)conserving natural resources, and iii) mitigating climate change to create a better future.

Funding Opportunities

Mini-grants and stipends funded through the Maryland State Department of Education under the Maryland Green Schools Act of 2019. Deadlines vary and are reviewed on a rolling basis until all funds have been allocated.

Grants and Stipends

Upfront costs associated with grants must be paid by the applicant first and will be reimbursed after the final report is submitted. Applicants that have not received funding in the past will be prioritized. Reviewing the MAEOE 2025-2026 Funding Opportunities Slideshow is a requirement for applying for funds.

Funding Opportunities:

Teacher Stipend for Leading a Green Team: Open to teachers or other school staff at any public or private Maryland school leading a youth Green Team. One stipend per school. $250 Stipend. Apply here.
Student Action Grant: Open to any public or private Maryland School to support action projects that exemplify students’ voices and have an environmental focus. One grant per school. Up to $2,000. Apply here.
Transportation Grant: Open to any public or private Maryland school, or non-profit organization working with a school, to support transportation to and from environmentally-focused field experiences or other relevant events. One grant per school/organization. Up to $1,000. Apply here.
Youth Summit Transportation Grant (opening 3/2/2026): Open to any public or private Maryland school, or non-profit organization working with a school, to support transportation to the 2026 Youth Summit at Sandy Point State Park on Thursday, May 28. One grant per school/organization. Up to $800. Apply here.
Teacher Professional Development Grant: Open to Maryland organizations developing and facilitating environmental education professional development that aims to build teacher capacity and comfort in leading environmentally focused lessons, projects, and field experiences. One grant per organization. Up to $2,500. Apply here.
